Car seat in a taxi in Quebec: what to understand before booking

Car seat questions come up often before a family ride. The important thing is to separate what the rules allow from what remains the safer choice for the child.

What the Quebec rules mean

The SAAQ explains that taxis and taxi-like vehicles operate under a specific framework for transporting children. That does not make the car seat question disappear. It means the ride should be prepared more carefully, especially for a baby or very young child.

What safety still suggests

From a safety point of view, the logic remains simple: when a child would normally need an appropriate seat, it is better to organize the trip so that the child can be secured properly. This matters even more for the youngest children and for longer rides.

If you do not have a seat, do not assume the ride will be straightforward without checking first. It is better to call before booking.

Questions to clarify before the ride

  • How old is the child and can the child be secured properly?
  • Is the ride short, long or connected to an airport departure?
  • Are you bringing your own car seat?
  • Will there be a stroller or other luggage?

When the booking needs to be clarified directly

For a YUL transfer, a very early departure or a ride with several bags, it is better to speak directly with the taxi service instead of sending an incomplete request. The booking page is useful, but a phone call is more effective when safety or equipment is involved.
